Mark Diaz Named Vice President for Budget and Planning

Mark Diaz, who for the past seven years has overseen the University of Miami’s annual budget and related budgetary operations, has been named vice president for budget and planning, bringing more than 20 years of experience in his field to the position.

Since 2005 Diaz has played an influential and growing role in the development, oversight, and management of the University’s budget and capital planning processes. He is responsible for the University’s annual plan of operations and the annual capital plan. He also collaborates with Finance and Treasury on the five-year strategic operating and capital plans.

Diaz will continue to be responsible for the strategic development of the budget and capital plans as well as the organizational development and functional oversight of the business operations within the academic units and centers. He will serve as a key advisor in the Office of the Provost, leading the implementation of initiatives and supporting long-range planning and resource allocation consistent with established priorities and effective fiscal and operational management.

“Mark has played and continues to play a leading role in the implementation of the University’s strategic plan,” said Thomas J. LeBlanc, executive vice president and provost. “His leadership on budget policies and practices has been instrumental in identifying the resources that support the plan; his detailed modeling of revenues and expenses has made truly strategic planning possible. This promotion is a well-deserved recognition of his many responsibilities and contributions to the increasing excellence of the University of Miami.”

Diaz joined the University in 1999, spending six years as executive director of medical finance operations and budget at the University’s Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. He became associate vice president for budget and planning in 2005. Before joining the University, he handled audit and consulting work as a manager for the national public accounting firm of KPMG Peat Marwick LLP.

Diaz graduated from the University of Miami cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He also holds a master’s degree in professional accounting from UM.

Civically active, Diaz is past president of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center. He has also served as a member of the Development Committee for Habitat for Humanity and is a strong supporter of the Children’s Home Society.
